This was the initial cover rendering. I found it very disappointing, frankly. It reminded me of something from a 1956 Reader's Digest Condensed Book.
I suggested that the cover might want to deep focus on a body part: eyebrows, fingers, etc. This concept shows a focus on a dancer's painted feet.
Everyone felt more mystery was desirable. Here, dancers swirling in darkness create a sort of abstract of motion.
Nothing seemed right. Amazingly, the final cover had been tossed out early on. The stone that builders rejected...
